The beautiful Bavarian village of Oberammergau has performed this spell-binding play since 1634 and from that small village its fame has spread to the four corners of the world.
The play is performed every 10 years and this year will be the 41st performance maintaining the continunity of this unqiue event which first started when the village elders promised to perform the 'play of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ' when they were spared from the Plaque.
The play is performed 5 times a week from May until October and tens of thousands are expected to watch. The actors are all from the village of Oberammergau and it might be that you host serving breakfast to you in the morning is on stage playing a major role in the afternoon. The men, for example, will start to allow their hair to go uncut from Mid 2009 and this adds to the flavour of this very special event. Even though the words are spoken in German, you will find yourself totally immersed in the dramatic music generated by a huge orchestra and choir, as well as the scenses, sets, and costumes as the Easter story if dramatically brought to life in front of your very eyes and will remain in your memory for may years to come.
In 2010 the Play will start for the first time in its history, in the afternoon, at 2.30pm with a break for your 3 course included dinner at 5pm before the final part commences at 8pm until 10.30pm.
The impressive auditorium which can seat almost 5000 people is fully covered, with the exception of the stage, which still maintains the tradition of being outdoors against the impressive backdrop of the Bavarian mountains. All our seats are in the two best viewing areas and accommodation is in the upper most three categories of hotels, therefore maintaining our tradition of offering only the best available holidays at great-value prices.
Oberammergau boasts many shops, restaurants and bars, but perhaps one of the most attractive features are the many colourful murals that adorn the typical flower bedecked buildings, which make this village a popular place to visit, even during the years when the Passion play is not being performed. During your stay you will be able to enjoy special church services and meetings. The village also has an excellent indoor and outdoor swimming pool complete with sauna complex.
